Republican Women’s Caucus Statement on Sexual Assault Allegations Against Rep. Jimmy Gomez

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Republican Women’s Caucus Chair Kat Cammack (FL-03) released the following statement:

“No Member of Congress, Republican or Democrat, is above accountability. Congressional employees deserve a workplace free from harassment and abuse, and every person who comes forward deserves to be heard and treated with dignity.

“A woman showed real courage in coming forward and telling the Ethics Committee that she was sexually harassed and assaulted by Representative Gomez. She deserves a process that is fast, fair, and fearless. Due process must be respected, but it cannot be used to run out the clock. The committee should move with urgency, and if these allegations are substantiated, Representative Gomez must resign and any criminal conduct must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

“The standard cannot change depending on who is accused. Wrong is wrong. The pattern on Capitol Hill is undeniable, which is why we will unveil our bipartisan reform package addressing sexual misconduct in September. The power imbalance between a Member of Congress and a congressional staffer does not disappear simply because that staffer works for another office. Congress must close the gaps that allow sexual misconduct and abuse of power to persist.”
